With pointed fangs I sit and wait; with piercing force I crunch out fate; grabbing victims, proclaiming might; physically joining with a single bite.

What am I?

  1. In the book “White Fang,” by Jack London, White Fang falls into the hands of Beauty Smith, who pits the wolf-dog against wolves, a lynx, and, ultimately, a bulldog named Cherokee in order to win bets. White Fang, therefore, sits and waits until the fight begins, knowing his fate depends on whether he wins or loses. When White Fang wins his dog fights, he is proclaimed a mighty fighter! But when he loses, as when Cherokee grabs him by the throat, he must be rescued or will die. To rescue White Fang, the two dogs, who are joined together by the bulldog’s death grip, must be forced apart.
I’ve read this book many times—so many times, in fact, that I’ve had to staple the torn cover back on it more than once!.
